What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication. Within this context, art is not used as diagnostic tool but as a medium to address emotional issues which may be confusing and distressing.’ (British Association of Art Therapists, 2015)

Words can be hard to find for many reasons meaning talking therapies can feel difficult to engage with. Art psychotherapy offers a safe, confidential space to use art materials and have the opportunity to think about current situations and problems in your life, without the anxieties of finding the right words. It can help you to explore patterns and behaviors safely, enabling you to work through obstacles and help you feel more confident.

I work with a wide range of problems that can manifest themselves in different ways; Depression, Anxiety, Phobias, Lack of confidence, Relationship problems, Separation, Divorce, Dementia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Bereavement. These are just a few issues that can have a dramatic and sometimes crippling effect on individuals. Art Psychotherapy can help and support people to promote growth and change in their lives that may have become difficult to manage.
